INSTRUMOTIONAL
An installation by Nik Haffner and Thomas McManus

Last public presentation: Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona.
From 25th March to 22th April 2010

The installation reproduces the images and themes of Nik Haffner’s animated dance film “Instrumotional Entrückt”. Visitors are invited to enter a construction made from benches and cubes that are arranged so as to allow visitors to place their heads inside and watch the video screened within them in a continuous loop.  Through their interaction, viewers change the external aspect of the installation and thus become part of it.

“Instrumotional Entrückt” is an animated film made by Nik Haffner in 1993 when he was a young dancer with the Frankfurt Ballet. It is inspired by the personal gestuality and scenography of the company’s choreographer and director, William Forsythe.
Using traditional stop-motion animation, Haffner composed a choreography using doll dancers in an austere space that only contains a series of benches, which share the spotlight with the animated characters. Life-sized reproductions of these benches are the visible elements that make up the installation "Instrumotional".

In a seemingly haphazard arrangement of benches that support a series of cubes, the artists invite us to view the film piece from unusual positions: lying down, seated, crouching or standing up. Haffner and McManus met as fellow dancers in Forsythe's company and currently work together as dancers and choreographers in the group Commerce.

This installation has been shown at CCCB Barcelona in the context of Dies de Dansa 2006 festival, at SouthBank Centre of London in 2007, and at Mercat de les Flors, Barcelona, in 2010.

It is a associated production of the artists, the Goethe-Institut Barcelona and NU2’S associació per la creació, with the support of Fundación Goethe España.
